Saïda Menebhiسعيدة المنبهي

Framed portrait captioned “سعيدة المنبهي”, “Saida MENEBHI”, “1952 - 1977”

Born in September 1952 in Marrakech. She studied English literature at Mohammed V University in Rabat and taught English. She was an activist in the National Union of Moroccan Students (UNEM), the Moroccan Labour Union (UMT) and the organisation Ilal Amam (“Forward”).

Arrested in January 1976 with her comrades Rabaea Ftouh, Pierra Di Maggio and Fatima Oukacha. Tortured at Derb Moulay Chérif. In February 1977 she was sentenced to five years in prison, plus two years for contempt of court, after denouncing the oppression of women in Morocco at the hearing.

With her comrades, she went on hunger strike to obtain political prisoner status. She died on 11 December 1977, on the thirty-fourth day, aged 25.

She left a posthumous collection, Poèmes - Ecrits - Lettres de Prison (Éditions Feed-back, Rabat, 2000). Abdellatif Laâbi called her, in French, “l’irrépressible petite étoile” (the irrepressible little star).
